Wikipediaの限界 ― 2009/08/18 03:06
/.Jの記事になっていた、「Wikipedia の成長は終盤に入っている」という話についてのコメントの流れを見ての感想。

以前から、いわゆる「要出典」タグが付けまくられたり、「独自研究」の名の下に記事が削除されたりと、その荒れっぷりに残念な気持ちにさせられていた。
ウソを削除するのは正義だと思うけれど、記事の品質を向上させるという名目で頑張り過ぎている素人編集者達に支配されているのがWikipedia（日本語版）の現状なのだと思う。
だから、いくらルールや基準を作ってもダメで、素人達の個性や趣味で議論が進められて、結局フレームになったり、微妙な品質の記事になってしまう。ボランティアベースの仕事では、必ずしも個人の能力が影響力の大きさに比例するのではなく、ただ単に声が大きく、執念深いといった性質で影響力が決まってくるところがある。適材適所にならないことも多い。
むしろ、無償の努力というものを、偏った「思い入れ」を全く排除して公正に仕事をできる人というのはよほど人徳のある人物であり、奇特であると思える。
逆に考えて、ある意味でプロフェッショナルとして編集業務に徹する人を用意するというのであれば、それにはそれなりの維持コストがかかるわけで、Wikipediaがこれまで成長してきたモデル、ブランド（ボランティアベース、誰でも投稿可能、無償公開）と矛盾してしまいかねない。
そういう意味では、それがWikipediaの立ち位置であり、その記事が従来からの百科事典ほどのオーソリティは持たず、Google検索の結果よりは信憑性が期待される記事、というものなのだろう。それが限界であり、そのポジションであればこそこれまで成長してきたと言える。
これから先があるのか、あるいは終熄へ向かうのか。運営者達は百科事典の品質を目指しているのだろうが、それにしては「出典」だけでは権威付けが不十分だろう。
その未来は、ボランティアベースの方向にあるのか、あるいはプロフェッショナルベースの方向にあるのか、興味があるところではある。
