何気なく、ディスカバリーチャンネルを見ていたら羊皮紙の作り方についてDirty Jobsでやっていた。

体験取材を受けていたのは、この工房。

革製品は見た目にも美しく、質感も優れているけれど、実際に作る工程はまさにDirty Jobの代表格であることを再度認識させられた。

肉を食べるために動物を殺した後、残った皮を無駄にせず利用するという理由付けが今のところ一般人の倫理における容認ラインであるとはいえ、その基準は一般人の想像力の限界（欠如）に依存しているように思える。実際に全工程を見てしまった場合、どれだけの人が容認しつづけることができるだろうか。

大昔は、人間が生きること自体が困難な時代であって、文字通り命の取り合いの結果として肉を食い、皮を利用していたわけだけれど、現代においては、うまいから肉を食い、好きだから皮を利用し続けている。

キリスト教の人は、すべての家畜は神から人に与えられたものだから良い、と倫理的な価値観を教えられ、維持し続けられるのかもしれないが、宗教観が希薄になってしまった人がベジタリアンとか、ビーガンになるものなのだろうか。
